Newspaper Super Structures

Children will build structures using newspaper and other materials.

Big Idea: Different materials can be used to build structures

Materials:

  • Flat cardboard
  • Cardboard tubes
  • Newspapers
  • Scissors
  • Masking tape
  • String
  • Pictures of various stages of building being constructed printed from the internet
  • paint
  • paint brushes

Vocabulary:
Construction: to build or make by putting together parts.
Structure: something built or constructed, as a building, bridge, or dam.
Frame: strong materials used to support structure as a base.
Reuse: use more than once.

Activity Directions:

  1. Show pictures of frames of buildings and stages of construction. Discuss the importance of a frame.
  2. Provide groups of children with supplies listed.
  3. Demonstrate different ways newspapers can be reused as parts of a building (tubes for frames, flat for walls, etc.) Ask them to build a building, starting with the frame, using only the few supplies listed.
  4. Have the children decorate their cardboard and newspaper buildings with markers and paints.

Q. Which material do you think would make the best frame? Why?
Q. Do you think that newspaper and cardboard make good building materials in real life? Why? Why not?
Q. What are buildings made out of?
A. Glass, steel, bricks, wood, etc.
Q. What material were used to build your home?
