Senses Walk

Encourage children to use their senses to explore the world around them.

Big Idea: Five senses are used to explore any environment.

Materials:

  • Good pair of walking shoes

Vocabulary:
5 Senses: smell, taste, hearing, touch and sight

Activity Directions:

  1. Take a walk around your school playground, to a nearby park or woods or simply around your school.
  2. As children walk, encourage them to pay attention to each of their five senses. Have them close their eyes- what do they hear, what do they smell? Have them hold their hands over their ears – what do they see? Touch the grass – how does it feel? Smell?
  3. Repeat the walk as often as you can. Observe how your senses detect changes.
  4. Return back to the classroom and discuss what the children observed with their senses.

Investigation Questions:

Q. How does the earth feel?
Q. Take a deep breath and smell the air; what do you smell?
Q. Can you guess what lunch will be?
Q. What do you see?
Q. What kind of animals can you hear?
Q. How has what you see change?
Q. Does that tree look the same?
Q. Are there any new smells? Or sounds?
