Summer Youth Employment in the Arts Program

Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago is currently seeking three (3) high school students to intern in our Art Studio from June to September. These students will gain real-life experience working with children from birth to age 8, engaging them in developmentally appropriate activities in the Museum’s Art Studio.
This is a paid internship. Interested students should have a demonstrated interest in the arts and enjoy working with children. The Art Studio internship will be approximately 12-18 hours per week for 15 weeks beginning June 4, 2019.

Internship responsibilities will be primarily visitor-facing and artistic in nature. Art Studio interns will work directly with visitors in the Art Studio and on art-centered activities throughout the Museum.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Engaging early childhood visitors through developmentally appropriate practices.
• Setting and resetting the Art Studio throughout the day.
• Assisting and providing direction to visitors in the use of Studio environment.
• Conducting daily tasks to ensure the cleanliness of the art studio.
Internship activities will take place at Kohl Children’s Museum, primarily in the Art Studio.
Art Studio interns will benefit from this opportunity by acquiring real-life experience working with children and engaging them in developmentally appropriate activities in the Art Studio. Activities for the children in the Art Studio include painting, drawing, designing with clay and monthly art projects. The interns facilitate artistic play experiences between children and caregivers, which also results in personal growth for the interns.
Skills acquired include teaching and engaging children in learning through play. Additionally, interns will have opportunities to create and facilitate art-based lessons/activities for small groups of children.
Art Studio interns will create a portfolio of their work accomplishments, including photos, written descriptions of their work experiences and lesson plans they create. Performance is evaluated regularly, with a summers-end review meeting with the Director of Education. The Education staff will support the interns in reaching their summer employment goals.
