Learn about the physics of sound and how it can change, as well as how sound is created by different vibrations that we can make and see.
The Big Idea: Sound is created by vibrations that change when amplitude and pitch are altered. Different instruments and tools create different vibrations that we can see, feel and hear.
3 options available, appropriate for K – 3
VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP VIDEO RENTAL ($100): You will have 2-week access to a playlist of videos, and you can break up our instructional and educational videos however you please. Videos may be shown or streamed only to classrooms at one school or site only.

- Use patterns to explore pitch and amplitude.
- Three recorded informational videos
- Learn about pitch and amplitude and how they affect sound waves.
- Explore vibrations made in the Museum’s Ravinia Festival Music Makers exhibit.
- Hear the sounds made by different musical instruments.
- Two recorded story times
- Activity instructions provided in English and Spanish to support learning at school and at home
ADD-ON SUPPLY KITS ($50): Why waste time and money collecting supplies? We’ll ship 30 individual kits of supplies to one location with materials needed for each of the recorded activities. (Kits sold in sets of 30 only.)
