Materials

  • Paper cut into strips
  • Scissors
  • Tape or Glue
  • Setup
Only one table will be needed for this activity. Pre-strip paper or gather recycled scrap paper for this activity along with scissors and glue.

    Directions
Children may use the strips of paper to crumple, fold, cut the paper into different shapes to make a 3D sculpture. They may tape, glue, and weave the pieces together as well to construct their sculpture.
Encourage the children to name and explain their shapes while sculpting.

    Investigation Questions:

  • How can we turn the paper from flat 2D art to a 3D Sculpture?
  • What happens when you fold the paper? How else could you fold the paper?
  • What would happen if you put multiple pieces of paper together?
  • How can we make a sphere? A cube?
  • What kinds of shapes can you see?
  • Learning Standards

9.A.ECa Recognize and name common two- and three-dimensional shapes and describe some of their attributes (e.g. number of sides, straight, or curved lines)
Children will be cutting out shapes, such as circles and squares, to turn their paper into three dimensional structures containing spheres and cubes.

9.A.ECe Think about/imagine how altering the spatial orientation of a shape will change how it looks (e.g. turning it upside down)
While constructing their sculptures, children will be encouraged to experiment spatial orientations of shapes and how their sculptures’ will turn out if they are placed differently.

25.A.ECd Investigate and participate in activities using visual arts materials.
Children will be exploring 2D and 3D sculptures through visual art materials such as scrap paper.
