Sheridan's Business Person of the Year Speech
On Wednesday, January 10, 2017, at the Glenview Chamber of Commerce Officer Induction Ceremony, Sheridan Turner, President & CEO of Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago, was awarded the Business Person of the Year award from the Chamber. What follows is here acceptance speech:
I first came to Glenview just 12 years ago
My task was a children’s museum to grow
On Patriot Boulevard I set my sights
Preparing to take it to breathtaking heights
Excited to be the new kid on the block,
With many a door upon which I could knock
Success was assured by my first life preserver
The fabulous talents of Ms. Nancy Firfer
Past president of our fair village was she,
And what a life saver she turned out to be!
She made introductions around where we live
And showed me the best that this town had to give
Including a woman whom I must compare
to a real force of nature, our own Betsy Baer
My time with her served on the chamber of Commerce
Has made me grow more business-savvy, I promise
While serving as treasurer, meeting the mark
July 4th parades, Holiday in the Park
Developing partnerships, tireless forces,
And working with Wagner Farm, driving their horses
From strong business plans to fulfilling a mission
These roles helped me strengthen my Museum vision
I couldn’t just run things however I saw fit;
I’d think like a business, though we’re a non-profit
There’s really no difference, except for no tax
We make our decisions with data and facts.
I’ve learned from my peers; over time I have found
The Village has truly been my proving ground
My thanks to you for this award you bestow
And though I’ve been singled out, surely you know
The Glenview community – it must be heard
Should share the award which to me was conferred
My Museum Board who are always around me
And also the staff who routinely astound me
There’s one closing thought that I’m leaving with you
You make me love all of the things that I do!
