I Am Not a Costume by Maria DesJarlait
About the Author: Maria “White Cedar Woman” is an Arikara woman from Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota and Ojibwe from Red Lake, Minnesota. Raised on the reservation with big city dreams, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and ESL in Chicago. Now a preschool teacher in Illinois, she saw the need for books that reflect Native children today. Inspired by her own childhood and her daughters’ adventures with their grandmother, she wrote this book to encourage Native children to dream big.
